Mindfulness: Mindfulness practice cultivates present-moment awareness with an attitude of curiosity, exploration, and kindness. Formal mindfulness practice includes breath awareness and mindful sitting meditation; informal mindfulness practice develops moment-to-moment awareness during daily activities. Strengthening this innate, internal resource fosters resilience and improves our ability to respond more creatively to life's inevitable ups and downs.
Meditation: Leah Gilbert Occupational Therapy Services helps clients explore various forms of meditation, including mindfulness meditation, walking meditation and loving-kindness meditation. The health benefits of meditation are well researched and include lowered blood pressure, improved sleep, enhanced feelings of calm and well-being, and decreased distress with chronic pain.
HeartMath Biofeedback: HeartMath is a powerful biofeedback system to manage stress, enhance performance, and renew energy. Clients apply a set of self-management tools and technologies - easily learned and practiced at home - to create positive emotional and attitudinal shifts. HeartMath skills cultivate coherence between the heart rate, nervous system, hormonal system and the body's energetic system. This approach focuses on the heart's role as a key component of the emotional system, as positive emotions create harmony and coherence in heart rhythms and promote balance in the nervous system.
Acupressure: Clinical Acupressure promotes wellness by facilitating the healthy flow of the body's vital energies. In a treatment session, finger pressure applied to specific acupoints throughout the body rebalances natural energy flow and promotes self-healing. This gentle, non-invasive treatment is performed with the client dressed comfortably and typically takes about an hour.
Reiki: This gentle, hands-on healing method fosters the body's innate healing process. Hands are gently placed on the client (who remains fully clothed), and sessions can range up to a full hour. Reiki can promote feelings of deep relaxation, peace, and comfort.
Relaxation/Breathing Techniques: Breathing techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing, ujjayi breathing, and mindful breathing can be explored. Various relaxation techniques - including body scan, visual imagery, and autogenics - facilitate the relaxation response. Leah Gilbert Occupational Therapy Services works with clients to learn what works best. Learn "mini" relaxation techniques to use anytime during the day to shift from stress physiology into a relaxation mode.
